Bettyjane... can you define the "hissy fit?" Mine is crapping out. I will define crapping out. With DelPotro serving at match point, the stream stopped. During the last few points of the second set Cilic/Murray tie-break, the stream stopped. I have to close down all tabs and re-enter USOpen.org to get back on. Enough time to miss a game and a half. Well... I guess you get what you pay for.

Jenny

Leon, More tongue in cheek really, but I like to see a fight, not only for themselves but for the fans. If a player cares, I care. I can cope with unpleasant chokes, eg poor Marin, on occasions David. If struggling with injury/illness it's a different matter. Gasquet has the reputation of, shall we say to be kind, of losing heart, but yesterday he fought in trying conditions knowing David had the mental edge and game to back it up. My TV watch has been limited, haven't actually seen the Murray/Cilic match, just basing my comment re Marin on the scoreboard and comments here.

Jenny

Oh Marin...he's already clocked out by the look of the scoreboard. Any thoughts as to the 4th bagel set?

Bettyjane

Sperry, during the last few point of Cilic/Murray tie-break, my stream froze briefly and then I'd get a delayed stop and go sort of thing which I still see happening. For the past two years (maybe three) I've looked forward to this stream as being so far superior to anything out there. I hope it doesn't become a fromsport wannabe.

Bettyjane

Jen I'm apoplectic. He choked and undoubtedly kept thinking about that 5-1 set point lead squandered. Hard to watch him not come to net on a perfect approach time and time again. Too disgusted to watch that last set I'm ashamed to admit.

Murray is a despicable presence on court. That mouth of pure filth that even a non-deaf person can easily lip-read. And he never credits the opponent making a great shot. He just berates himself even more. Insufferable behavior. He must be destroyed.

Jenny

Thanks Bettyjane, I totally understand. I feel the same about Murray's on court demeanour, it can be most unpleasant at times and I'm no prude.

Btw, pats to the H!

saras

Susan

Agree....I was thinking the same thing that Andy didn't make a special thanks to his wife Brooklyn .

Leon

Seconded on all counts. I'd only note that tanking in a "broad sense" is not smth no-no even for best sportsmen. From my long-ago experience in pro sport I can definitely say that there hardly exist(ed) a player who never tanked, at least once, sometimes for ridiculous reasons, but still. That's life, and I don't lose sleep because of that.
But now I am literally losing it as I can't miss the RF-TB, alas! Hence I am tanking my work tomorrow, see?

sperry

Bettyjane... agree on the IBM stream. Actually sounds like a different problem than I am having. Mine just freezes and I can do nothing. The commentators are AT BEST mediocre, though. At worse... VERY, VERY bad. I never got her name, but during the Bethany-Sands/Mirza vs somebody, (Vinci/Errani?) match, the commentator clearly loved Bethany-Sands and hated Mirza. It was obscene. Every error was Mirza's fault. The capper? Bethany-Sands made an UE, and she said it was Mirza's fault because poor Bethany-Sands was tired because she had carried the team the whole first set. I actually shot them an e-mail expressing my dissatisfaction...lol.

Leon

So brilliant shots spoiled by the next silly UEs by Roger. Could be 3-0 easily...

chipnputt

Now gives the break back with 2 UEs and one DF.

Leon

Dangerous intermittancy in Roger's game so far.

Rick

I'm not liking the looks of this -- this is what I meant two days ago:

"Hm, I'm not ecstatic about Fed facing Berdych without having had to get through Fish first...but certainly also hoping that Fish is OK."

He's got that vacant look in his eyes again, playing loosely and just doesn't seem either focused or fired up.

Rick

Hm, well, can't complain about that game at 4-5. :-)
But it has that feeling of just doing enough to get by.

Ricke

I wish the crowd would get into this match a little and fire Roger up

chipnputt

Roger is not looking good. Timing is badly off and Berdych is on. Needs to win this set for I suspect he'll give one away with a lack of focus.

Rick

Can't win matches if you spray balls all over the place.
God, the UEs drive me insane.

Rick

Oh crap.
5-1 in the tiebreak.

Rick

7-1.
This is ridiculous.
I am going to take a bath and listen to Bill Clinton.

chipnputt

Roger is looking very ordinary. Right npw Berdych is definitely the favorite. He is playing well and I think he believes he can won.

Bettyjane

I never like seeing Berdy in Fed's draw and was kidding myself that his form wasn't up to snuff a week ago. Oh MAN!

Leon

Berdych laughs losing a crazy point and game...Good for him...or really? We'll see very soon...

Rick

Sorry, I peeked at 3-2.
OMG.

chipnputt

Murray came back from a set and 2 breaks down. Deja vu? Unless Fed circa 2006 shows up, I doubt it.

Leon

Tomas was uncertain in the end of the set but Roger did nit use that. Bad.
Weak chances then.

Bettyjane

Berdych has a much better serve than Cilic. And Roger went home after Mardy's withdrawal? Shouldn't he have at least done a practice match that day?

Leon

Chipnputt, I am afraid he left his 2006 form in Cincinatti.
In fact he is playing not so horrible, but Tomaz is so good AND determined today. So be it...

Leon

At last Berdych is starting to show his "true colours". Has Roger enough in the tank to benefit from it?

Leon

Must be the turning point. But anyway, mission completed. Roger did not deserve a loss in straights today. So, some logic is present.

Leon

Happy Berdych, kudos to him!
Deserved win.
Roger's saga - to be continued...

Rick

Y'all should have listened to Bill Clinton, it was WAY more entertaining.
Love him or hate him, the man can give a speech.

chipnputt

Well played Tomas! Deserved to win. Don't want to predict anything about Roger. I thought he was done after 2010 and e came back to become the best in the world again. First time since the 2004 FO that neither Federer or Nadal are in a GS semifinal. could this era be ending.

Tennis Planet

Why this loss will sting? Absence of Nadal?

chipnputt

TP, it'll sting because he lost. And he lost to someone he should beat most of the time. And he lost because he played very badly. That's pretty much it. Nadal's absence could have been a big deal a few years ago but it isn't today. For one, Nadal is not the non-clay court player he used to be and I think Federer would fancy his chances against him on this court. Second, Djokovic especially (took him out here two years in a row) but also Murray are far serious threats than they're ever been. In short, yes Nadal's absence improves Federer's chances but not like before when that would make a Federer a prohibitive favorite.

Jenny

I waited up to see Roger take the 3rd set. Despite hope, I didn't think he would prevail this time. Tomas was playing so well, whereas Roger didn't play well at all, imo it looked more like a chore, there were the occasional glimpses of the old magic but no more. Tomas was enjoying himself, the grins, swagger, confidence, belief. I really enjoy watching Tomas when he plays like this, always have done, clean striker like a hot knife through butter. Well deserved victory, it's about time he got the really big win.

chipnputt

I agree. Berdych is really fun to watch when his game is on. It's a big game and with a bit more consistency and he has #1 potential.

I really think that after Nadal and perhaps Djokovic, Berdych has the most belief among that he beat Federer.

Jenny

Dare I say, a late developer who has grown up, way back in 2004 when Berdy beat an in-form Fed at the Olympics, the experts predicted he would rise to great things, a slam winner and a future #1. He has the big game but lost between the ears more than anything, was inclined to be cocky and a whinge to his own detriment. I agree with you about him having most belief after Nadal, Djokovic, I hope he can keep it going - I don't think I can take any more chokes this tourney!

Bettyjane

Well done Berdy. Not the huge upset most uneducated will say based on past matches. Murray has a losing record against him but Berdy still hasn't put it together in consecutive matches in a major. McEnroe kept harping on the 4 days off in a row scenario screwing with Feds rhythm and timing. Walkovers are scary things. Having said that Berdy can beat an in form Fed. Fed was uber sharp the first couple of games so it was unsettling to watch him fall apart, hitting like a club player at times with all those splayed shots.

Leon

Are you watching. Jenny? Stupid question, though.
David broke back, 3-4 in the fifth.

Jenny

I'm here Leon. It's like the colosseum out there!

Jenny

I'm favouring Tipsy to win this now.

Leon

Congrats, Jenny!
I am delighted (and satisfied!), too.
Order holds, thank God.
Meanwile, only one CS winner will be in semis. Who would think. Wide open, really.
Bravo, David.

Jenny

OMG, what a match, fantastic! Ignore my previous comment! What a magnificent pair, David and Janko - applause.... Have you recovered, Leon?!

Leon

Yes, almost fully, Jenny. Of course, last night was horrible (totally missed sleep to see Roger lost, but OK). I am still strong enough, lol.

alex

So happy for Ferrer. I really want him to go all the way now. Congrat Jenny.

jett09

Congrats Jenny! Only managed to see the last few games but what a match! Kudos to David for his never say die attitude...what a warrior!

Jenny

Thank you guys! It was so close, it really could have gone either way, the fans enjoyed it. Reminds me of the quarters in NY against Rafa in 2007, it was a night match, I crawled into my bed at 4am BST and David went for a McDonalds!

Hi Jett!

Ricke

Jenny!!!!!! Woo Hoo!!!!! So glad your man Daveeed won today!! What an entertaining match. Both played so well.

chipnputt

Didn't see any of the matches today but looks like Ferrer and Tipsy played a thriller. Congrats to David. Anybody see Djokovic vs DelPo. Is Nole starting look like he did last year?

Jenny

Chip, Pity you weren't able to see the thriller, I think you would have enjoyed it. I've seen semis/finals which haven't been as exciting or gripping. It was a grind but it contained variety, guile and shotmaking too. For me, this was the match of the Open thus far, these two are a credit to our sport, country and fans. Sadly, I wasn't able to see the Djokovic/Delpo match because of the time difference, it was well into our night, I'll watch a replay on TV today.

Ricke, I'm glad you were able to enjoy the match after an emotional and sad week for you. LOL I bet Andy was thinking rather them than me!

Bettyjane

Very exciting match Jen. Congrats. Unfortunately I was swamped at work and then driving home in traffic and didn't get to see any of it. I was slightly surprised the match was so tight and hope this doesn't drain him for Saturday.

Delpo/Djoker was a fine second set but very formulaic. Delpo serving so well but ultimately fighting to hold on every game. Djoker is so focused now and let's face it, everything is breaking right for him, much as it did for Fed at Wimby.

Jenny

Bettyjane, I always find comical moments during a match. Can't recall precise details, but there was a bad call towards the end of the epic, the umpire over-ruled and awarded the point to David, Janko didn't object. LOL I don't know what got into David's head, mini outburst [not rude] marching up to the umpire's chair, eyes flashing, talking with his hands and speaking to the umpire in English...Umpire: David, David.. I awarded you the point! Arms up in apology.

chipnputt

My loss missing the Ferrer-Tipsy match. saw some highlights and looks like it was quite a battle. Saw some highlights of Djokovic-DelPo too -- Nole is looking very very good.

Jenny... if you have a few quid spare, Ferrer is being offered at 40-1 for the title. Very good odds.

Bettyjane

SO out of character for David. What tension he must have felt. Really sorry I missed this match. Jack and the Giant Killer await.

Jenny

Realistically, I can't see David beating Nole right now, so I'll hang on to my money and buy some rum! If it had been the same situation at the French I might have had a sneaky punt.

Rick

My interest level in this tournament has -- for better or for worse -- plummeted precipitously.
This augurs poorly (for me) for when Federer finally retires.
(But please note that this is an attitude I neither defend nor advocate -- or even welcome....)
Seems pretty clear it's gonna be Djokovic and Serena, and maybe the Bryan brothers. Ho hum.
Oh well, my disenchantment/disengagement will save me a ton of time this weekend.... :-)
To remaining Planeteers (and there don't seem to be many around -- where are M and banti and Nelson, for example?): enjoy the rest of the show.

Bettyjane

I can't help but shamefacedly agree Rick. I took Saturday and Monday off, anticipating Fed playing on these days. Cripes, I even factored in the rain issue when I took Monday but fate outmaneuvered me as Edward Rochester once said. I can't really get into Djoker unless he faces Nadal. Such is my obsession with Fed's legacy over anything else, yet I'll pull for Nole over Murray. But I'll still watch. I just won't be as high or low after the match is over.

Jenny

That's okay Rick, my interest comes and goes too. I'll be watching and hoping for a Nole/Berdy final, unless 'lil David can pull off an upset which is more heart wish on my part.

M, banti, where are you?

Gary Moser

ATTENTION: FED LEGACY OBSESSORS!!!
-----------------------------------
By losing to Berdych on Wednesday night,
Roger extended to 38 the following streak:

In every single Slam since the 2003 FO,
Roger has either won the tournament,
lost to a previous or future Slam Winner,
or lost to a previous or future Slam Losing Finalist.
Not one tomato can in the bunch!

Your Homework Assignment: who has the 2nd best streak?

banti

Hi all, well i've been following the event but sporadically. Have not caught a single match since the first round:( From what it seems Roger fought hard, and lost to Tomas , who at any given day can beat anyone on this surface, even Rafa! I'm more than content on what Fed has accomplished this year, even after this somewhat of a disappointing loss. The 17th was so story book, it could only be matched at Wimbi again next year:) I'll definitely catch that Murray/Berdych match on this surface if I can, what a thrill that may turn out to be. So keep your head up Bettyjane! Were heading into Roger's favorite stretch where a 6th WTF would be icing on the cake. Gary my guesses are Connors or Novak!

Jenny

Hi banti!

Gary, My guess: Nadal?

Gary Moser

"a 6th WTF would be icing on the cake."
-------------------------------------
6th WAS. 7th WOULD BE... :->

Gary Moser

Alas, Rafa's longest such streak
in Slams HELD is only 6,
and in Slams PLAYED only 11...

Gary Moser

Novak had a streak of 10 that was broken,
and will reach the 10 mark again
in this tournament no matter what happens
from here on...

Connors had a streak of 20,
but only based on Slams he PLAYED,
not held...

Jenny

I cannot believe Eurosport TV, they've let us European tennis fans down again with their half baked cover of the US Open. It's been impossible to rely on them and not good for my temper, no quarters, semis or finals live, but we get the Strongest Man, Vuelta and womens football! Thank goodness I've been able to find streams this last couple of days.

Bettyjane

Wow Jenny that's really pathetic. Right now there is a rain delay and I I'm really surprised this is the case with Murray in the mix.

Regards to Teddy and Rob of course

Jenny

Thx for the weather update Bettyjane. Sky are showing but I haven't subbed. Eurosport promised cover of the Open and have fallen badly short. Does the bad weather look to last?

Enjoy the matches and hello to Henry from us.

Jenny

We have movement, men in white boiler suits armed with brooms! Why don't they cover the court when it rains?

Bettyjane

Sorry I just saw your response Jenny! They're ready to go.

Bettyjane

Mary Carillo just explained that they don't tarp the court here due to a very bad drainage problem.

Such wind I've never seen on a court. Berdych broken early.

Jenny

Don't know how much longer I can stick with this match, Bettyj, streams are diabolical, timewasting, impossible to focus.

Rick

Huh. Berdych took the first.
But facing multiple break points leading off the second.

Rick

Yeah, broken to start the second....

Rick

Jenny, you don't have access in the UK to the live streams on the usopen.org website?
If not, too bad, they're pretty good.

Rick

BUT you have to put up with the relatively insufferable Luke Jensen....

Jenny

Sadly we don't Rick. I've given in to the dreaded live scoreboard. I'll try again for Nole/Ferru.

Rick

Unanticipated downer feature of a possible Djokovic-Murray final: having to watch the two trophy girlfriends hyper-emote their way through it.
Give me Mirka any day.

Wow, play just interrupted by players' CHAIRS blowing onto the court. Gotta hand it to the architects of Arthur Ashe. Brilliant.

Rick

Jenny, the Guardian is at least live-blogging the match. :-)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/sep/08/andy-murray-tomas-berdych-live

Jenny

Thank you, Rick, on to it now! Is Tomas playing badly or is Andy just too good?

Tennis Planet

JENNY

Jenny

Thanks TP. I will save this and give it a try another time. Thanks again.

Jenny

Play suspended due to threat of storms, winds and a tornado! Daveed was to serve for the set at 5-2! Just when I found a stream which was behaving itself!

Bettyjane

Such a shame. David was about to serve for the first set and the tourny decides to postpone play until tomorrow due to a severe weather system approximately 45 minutes away. (They wanted to give folks time to get to their cars/public transit. Wish they had played on the other court but the tourny official admitted they never really considered that. So another Monday final

RafaFan

A tornado what? They stopped the match just when David was serving for the first set! Freaking foul play. TV stations want the final to be played on Monday...

Jenny

It is a shame, better safe than sorry, but I bet David's spitting nails and Spanish verbals of the colourful variety!

Bettyjane

It's a tad strange as the Met game right next door is going on as usual. Maybe it's easier for those folks to get to their cars? I haven't been to Citifield but remember the long trek out of the USTA

Nole was complaining to the umpire saying "We're supposed to play in this? " Then the umpire said the previous match had winds that were even worse. He must be pretty happy.

This 3 day first round crap has to stop. Then everything gets crunched at the end. I think I heard that next year the men's final will be a nighttime match.

Jenny

Bettyjane, Andy handled the conditions better than Tomas, he deserved the win but gets an extra day's rest. David was outplaying Nole despite the wind, he wasn't a happy bun.

Bettyjane

Yes Tomas has that high service toss. David is lower to the ground than Nole---less wind I suppose. I really hope this trend of whoever is behind has the advantage after a rain delay stops dead in its tracks tomorrow. Nole is a slow starter as a rule, so maybe this can get David a lead in the second set as well.

Jenny

LOL "lower to the ground"! David needs to keep up the controlled aggression, hold his nerve and serve, to truly believe he deserves to be in the final. Easier said than done of course!

Rick

Gotta <3 this one:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2012/sep/08/victoria-azarenka-maria-sharapova-us-open-2012

Bettyjane

To be fair, a tornado DID actually touch down in Queens yesterday afternoon. Very unstable weather in the entire area yesterday. It's cooler, dry and glorious weather this morning and for most of the week.

Jenny

Nole has raised his level which I suspected might happen, conditions suit him. David losing confidence, just keep going, you will get your chances....

kitty

this nole-ferrer game is sooo boring

Rick

Ho hum. I said two days ago: it's gonna be Djokovic, Williams, and the Bryan brothers.

sperry

Rick... RE: the Azarenka/Sharapova match. I know we can't get inside of the player's heads, but Maria's screaming (offensive or not) just SOUNDS like someone exerting themselves. Like a Karate match. (But maybe she pushes it... I can't know.) It is impossible to assign motives, but... it is very hard for me to believe that Azarenka doesn't do it to bug her opponent. I remember reading somewhere (I am 95% sure it was Werthiem... who has lots of credibility) that the WTA was going to make a "difinitive statement" on screaming before the US Open. If that happened, it changed nothing.

Bettyjane

Regarding grunting in the WTA: last mention of this was around Wimby when there was talk that they'd be cracking down on "future" grunters, thereby letting current grunters continue. To me this is absurd. If it would mean a point penalty, you can bet these two would stop it pronto.

claire

I'm hoping for Murray to get his first grand slam tomorrow. Go ANDY!
Susan there msu be a reason for andy Rodrick to not mention Brooklyn. She didn't travel with him all the
time. I did find it interesting that he didn't specifically say her name when talking about
retirement. Maybe it wont last like brook shields n aggassi. I just wish andy the best n
Much happiness.

Tennis Planet

Did you watch the 'tunnel' interview of Serena and Azarenka? Serena's voice AND body (I think) was trembling. Azarenka's face was as if it was made of stone. WOW!!!!!!!!!!

Rick

Usually when I watch Serena Williams, she has as many UEs as winners (or more).
Not today -- she's just merciless. And God, what a retriever.
The good news is that Azarenka (so far, anyway) is at least not mentally intimated. So there's some semblance of a match, if not a match-up.
