Federer / Wawrinka

Gary Moser

Just curious.....what do you base this answer on?

Jenny

As I have no idea what TP is looking for, this is just a guess:

Nadal/Ferrer - Spain - clay

DSG

I THINK I remember from ratio and proportion that we have to have one more bit of info before this problem can be solved.... but then I was never good at math and I might be wrong

:-/

DSG

I think I've got this one:

Djokovik and his little brother are to Serbia

M

I'm going to guess twice --

If TP changes his mind and it does turn out to be tennis stats regardless of what he says (he's been known to do that), I would say Djokovic / Tipsarevic / Serbia.

If it's what I think he's thinking, I'd say Berdych / Stepanek / Czechoslovakia.

Or else Cilic / Ljubicic / Croatia.

Or possibly Ancic / Ljubicic / Croatia.

(How can this -- a Wall of Fame question, no less -- have nothing to do with tennis stats, when this is a tennis board, without even another hint? This, imo, is starting to go way past David Byrne's "Stop Making Sense".)

Bettyjane

TP posts a ridiculously arbitrary question and hilarity ensues.

I abstain on some sort of principle.

Jenny

LOL I'll have another go:

Gonzalez/Massu - A complete set of Olympic medals for Chile

Stella

Sampras and Agassi are to the USA --- here's my thinking --- Safin large man lots of dark hair as was Sampras. Davy is thin and gnomelike with no hair as is Agassi.
there -- nothing to do with tennis.
as DSG says we need more info so based on the info given in the question we all win !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Veglia

Sharapova and Safina, also to Russia. Based on looks.

DSG

We all win. Stella's right. Make it happen, T.

Barbara

Berdych and Stephanek to the Czech Republic

Leon

I vote for Stella.

alex

??????

M

Smart girl.
:-)

Murph

John Isner and Donald Young are to USA. Based on height. Also, Berdych and Pospisil are to Czech Republic. (Height)

Kitty

kasparov and karpov

Murph

Even though I entered mine, Stella's got my vote.

Stella

sorry Murph --- Pospisil is Canadian

chipnputt

Verdasco and Ferrer to Spain. Massively talented party animal and hardworking grinder who plays a lot of tournaments.

Second guess: Lopez/Ferrer. Same reasons.

M

*votes along with the cool people*

Murph

Whoooops. Thanks Stella. Seems there are two with same name; checked it out on line & a Czech named Jaroslav ranked 299 is who I compared with Berdych when looking for height differences. But you're still a winner!

Stella

Chip -- I think you've got it ---- but that refers to tennis ability/style and TP said nothing to do with tennis stats or accomplishments ..

Have you won your 5th WOF ???

Stella

Chip has a good suggestion too .

Interesting for the umpire if Pospisil plays Pospisil. Like when its Ferrer v Federer , diction is important, Or Wozniak v Wozniaki

Jenny

"Interesting for the umpire if Pospisil plays Pospisil. Like when its Ferrer v Federer , diction is important, Or Wozniak v Wozniaki"

A comm nightmare when it was Ferrero v Ferrer

chipnputt

Stella -- no idea how TP's mind works but I think I'm within the parameters of his hint. He said tennis stats/accomplishments. My answer is more about attitude/style/approach to game.

jett09

LOL good one Barbara!

chipnputt

One more shot with an entirely different line of reasoning. Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Conchita Martinez. Russia produces tons of outstanding female players while Spain produces tons of outstanding male players. Russia has the greatest presence in the the WTA rankings and Spain in the ATP rankings. Sanchez-Vicario and Martinez, like Safin and Davydenko, are the rare outstanding player from the "minority" gender in their country.

M

"A comm nightmare when it was Ferrero v Ferrer"

Yes, Jenny. That was just ... *shakes head*

M

Hey, jett - I said that pair first!

Barbara got their country formally correct, though. I knew there was something amiss but I couldn't think what it was - and nobody corrected me up there, either. LOL.

Jenny

Chip's Spanish mens comparison makes sense to me, eg party animals v the committed worker who isn't flashy. Much like Safin/Davydenko. I would argue re talent though, those three Spanish boys and Davydenko all have it in different ways. A player doesn't stay in the top 10 for years without it, eg Ferrer and Davydenko [who has now slipped under the radar].

Stella

so, I couldn't sleep last night and came up with more.
Along Chips idea of flash versus hard worker what about Safin and Kafelnikov of Russia ( didn't Kafelnikov play everything, and doubs too.
Or there is the idea of babe magnet and definitely not babe magnet so I'd add Rafter and Masur of Australia or Edberg and Wilander of Sweden.
Or there is the idea of politics in a tennis affterlife ( Safin is in the Russian Parliament ) so how aboout Nastase ( Mayor of Belgrade ) and Tiriac of Romania.
Or there is the idea again of natural talent or hard worker so how about Mc Enroe annd Courier USA.

adp

one with grand slam - other without one... to continue.. FOR SWISS

M

Hey, Stella -

I think most of these are great but I think *both* the dashing men you mention from Sweden are babe magnets.

I got the chance to take some shots of Mats last year on practice day out at Ashe -- not only is he in great shape still and was surrounded by lovely ladies, but I was quite pleased he was willing to be a photo subject for me, to paraphrase jennifur, "for suuurrre". LOL.

Dude

Tommy Haas & Boris Becker to Germany !!

Second option--> Batman & Superman to DC comics

Stella

Ok so its Edberg and Wilander Sweden ( one easy style and plays with flair and the other a grinder

O

Micky and Minnie are to Disneyland.

Stella

or, since Marat always had a pile of babes in his box and Davy had a fairly empty box how about James Blake ( all the J Block ) and Todd Martin USA.

or Becker Stich Germany ( Becker had plenty of conquests, Stich not famous for that at all

TheHumbleOne

Batman and Robin are to Gotham City

jett09

Oh you did to M! teehee

TP can we get another clue? Are they males? Females?

jett09

Wahaha Batman & Superman!! Nice one!

DSG

O's answer is BRILLIANT and is the winner

vr

Stella's first answer is the one

alex

I agree adp. you beat me to it.

alex

Stella is the winner.

Lobbo

Andy Roddick / James Blake / USA

DK

... As TP and a goat are to TP's basement. Both are from there, but only one is great, and worthy of admiration. The other one just makes the first one look good.

O

Thanks! DSG, now I feel even more confident about winning this one.

Lobbo

I see the relationship as Sex Symbol to Sex Thimble.

M

That is hilarious (as well as rhymey!) -- however, as stunning as Marat is, I don't get the sense that Kolya's lovely wife has any complaints.

#justguessing

DSG

And I think the real give away here is Minnie Mouse

I will be VERY disappointed if O doesn't win this Wall of Fame

Tennis Planet

WINNER: M.

Berdych and Stephanek to the Czech Republic.

Stella

why TP? What were you basing this on ?

well done M

Tennis Planet

STELLA,

Extreme looks from same country.

Jenny

Congrats, M!

Stella

yes, valid.
but so was Ancic ( or Cilic ) and Ljubicic or Agassi and Sampras

M

LOL! Thank you, Jenny!

I think TP might also have just gotten weary of my, um, protracted disappointment about not winning the WOF-eligible Rafaquestion via the Rafaquote, or my photo + essay exho coverage (though I guess I have to forgive that because it wasn't an official ATP event played for ranking points :-)).

Thank you, TP!

*dances*

M

"but so was Ancic ( or Cilic ) and Ljubicic"

I still would have won with those (they were my second & third guesses).

I guess that should unnerve me a little. o.O

(Off the record, I actually think Kolya and Ljuby are pretty dashing guys ... and as I mentioned in another comment, I don't think their lovely wives have any complaints. LOL!)

M

This is hilarious.

Stella

be worried, be very worried M -- your mind is becoming on the same wavelength as TP's

Stella

first of all -- I'm glad M got her WOF -- there have been several times when her answer was essentially correct before and she didn't win .
Now -- I've been researching a bit -- now that we know what we are looking for .
Although Safin and Davydenko are both "Russian " and look very different that is because "Russian " covers a lot of ethnicities. Davy is Ukrainian by birth ( only got Russian citizenship when he was 18 ) whereas Safin is Tatar in backgrould and the Tatars re associated with Mongols ( think of Dinara's face, how round it is ) so although both men are seen as Russian they have vastly different backgrounds .
Now to get 2 vastly different looking men representing one country maybe we should have been asked to say Tsonga ( or even Monfils ) and Simon --- France

Bettyjane

Congrats M on your long overdue win. TP you're waxing quite shallow on Federer's birthday eve!!! This WOF contest and then the Borg post. Where is the TP of yesteryear. Where, please . . . where????

chipnputt

"Extreme looks from same country"???

Man oh man, TP, how many examples do you want of two players from the same country who look very different? This is seriously lame for a WOF.

M

Oh, Chip.

It's not so much about them "looking very different". TP is just being very terse in his elaboration.

In my humble opinion, a more in-depth explication of said elaboration would be "more conventionally attractive" compared to "less conventionally attractive", for TP's values of "conventionally attractive" (which is also why Stella's French examples probably couldn't be applied ... at which point -- especially if you throw in the people who believe someone of half-African descent (Jo-Wil) shouldn't necessarily be playing for France, so he shouldn't be counted -- we'd have a bevy of people arguing the subjectivity of measures of conventional attractiveness for gentlemen ... at which point we'd be here all night).

Now you already have, what, five WOFs? Please stop trying to put an asterisk by my win.

To the gracious ladies above, Stella and Bettyjane - thank you very much. :-)

*dances some more*
