Predictions for 2017: Stan surprises everyone by completing career slam after winning wimbledon.

Veglia

Before we get to 2017 let's revisit our predictions for 2016. Unfortunately, only a few people participated and only TP and Veglia submitted their full lists. So here's what they were:

TP
Djokovic will win at least two Slams? TRUE
Nadal will reach Roland Garros final? FALSE
Federer will reach at least one Slam final? FALSE
Wawrinka could bag his third Slam? TRUE
Murray may drop out of top five? FALSE
Djokovic will end the year as No. 1? Going out on a limb and an arm on this!!!!! FALSE
And the big one: Federer and Nadal may add No. 18 and No. 15 to their Slam total?????? FALSE

Veglia
1) Djokovic wins only one GS, RG FALSE
2) Federer wins Olympic gold in singles FALSE
3) Murray wins 2 GSs (OK, this is a joke) FALSE
4) Most improved player will be Gasquet FALSE
5) Wawrinka will get married to Vekic FALSE OR ?

TP wins!!!

For 2017, my predictions are:

1) Only two players win GSs: Murray and Djokovic
2) Both Federer and Nadal fail in their return efforts, overall.
3) Nadal manages to win a Masters tournament.
4) Federer is still in denial of retirement.
5) Most improved player is Zverev.

sperry

Actually, this could be fun with standardized questions. See who gets the most right. I don't know if you want to include the women. Some sample questions (mostly stolen from above): Who will finish #1 on the men's side? Women's? Who will win (each slam)? Highest ranked player to retire? Biggest fall in ranking of top 10 player? Biggest rise in ranking of top (10?) (25?) player? Anyone in the top 25 be busted for PED's? Who will get the most right in this competition? Ya'll can think of more. Whaduyatink, TP?

Tennis Planet

Link @ left side bar under 'Misc'.

Alpha

Excellent idea by Sperry. To follow up on his mail. let's try a standardized questionnaire. Her's an attempt. As it's a Tennis, and not ATP, site, lets do both men and women.

1. Who will be the year-end #1?

2. Who will win:
2.1 AO?
2.2 FO?
2.3 Wimbledon?
2.4 USO?

3. Who will have the biggest fall among players in the top 10?

4. Which new player will be in the WTF next year?

5. Will Federer or Nadal be in the top 5 at the year end? If yes, whom? Or both?

Tie Break: Anything out of the ordinary you see happening?

Women:

1. Who will be the year-end #1?

2. Who will win:
2.1 AO?
2.2 FO?
2.3 Wimbledon?
2.4 USO?

3. Who will have the biggest fall among players in the top 10?

4. Which new player will be in the WTA Finals next year?

5. Will Sharapova be in the top 5 at the year end? Will Serena retire? If yes, whom? Or both?

Tie Break: Anything out of the ordinary you see happening?

sperry

Only a few more days to do your predicting!!! So far I have Jabali, Alpha, Veglia, Stella, Terror, and Alex. Maybe we can talk TP into a Wall of Fame listing.

Tennis Planet

SPERRY

How will you choose the winner? 100% accurate (Don't think that's happening but....)? 80%?........

O

Maybe a WOF for every slam winner! too cheap?

O

BTW: Fed - AO, FO-Nadal, Stan -W, Murray-UO, ND-WTF. Year end number one - Nadal.

Gary Moser

I predict a high-profile Serb will abruptly announce their retirement.

sperry

Pick some women, if you want a realistic chance for the most points.

sperry

Say it isn't so, Joe.

sperry

Add up the correct answers... person with the most wins? Are all the questions worth roughly the same amount?

sperry

Ok. Predicting is now closed. I have Jabali, Alpha, Veglia, Stella, Terror, and Alex. And me.

alex

ha ha Djoker out Murray out !!
Love to refresh all our predictions now.

O

Where are the predictions, may I see the AO part? please.

sperry

I'll post them when the AO is over. Everyone except Stella and Alex missed the men's winner already.

O

OK, look forward to the final then, and I hope one of our predictions come true.

sperry

Ok... with one in the bag... we've got Sperry, Alpha, Veglia, Terror, and Alex all tied up at..... (drum roll) ZERO!!
Congrats to Stella and Alex for nailing this one! Oh... yeah... and to Mr. Federer, who had something to do with it.

Stella

Sperry -- where can we see what the 7 of us predicted. You say I got the AO correct. That's great but I forget what I said

sperry

Sperry Jabali Alpha Veglia Stella Terror Alex

Djokovic Cilic Djokovic Murray Federer Djokovic Federer

I will try to post all questions and predictions ... but moving Excel cells to these boxes usually requires more patience than I have.

Stella

thanks, cos if we know who we voted for at RG it puts the pressure on as we watch !!

sperry

This is what happens when I cut and paste:
ATP Sperry Jabali Alpha Veglia Stella Terror Alex
Who will be #1 Murray Federer Djokovic Djokovic Milos Djokovic Federer
Who will win
AO Djokovic Cilic Djokovic Murray Federer Djokovic Federer
FO Djokovic Federer Thiem Djokovic Murray DelPotro Murray
Wimbledon Murray Wawrinka Wawrinka Murray Milos Federer Federer
USO Murray Federer Djokovic Djokovic Murray Cilic Murray
Who will have the biggest fall among players in the top 10? Monfils Monfils Monfils Wawrinka Stan Nadal Wawrinka
Which new player will be in the WTF next year? Zverev Kyrgios Zverev Zverev Zverev Zverev
Will Federer or Nadal be in the top 5 at the year end? If yes, whom? Or both? Neither Yes, no No, no Yes, yes Yes, no Yes, no
Tie Break: Anything out of the ordinary you see happening? Ball will hit Raonic in the head. His hair will shatter and he will cut his hand falling on it. Murray and Novak not winning slam. Raonic out of top 5 due to injury Lendl and Murray break up Delpo in top 5 Kyrgios becomes reality TV star DelPotro winning a GS and returning to WTF Fed and Nadal still "up there"

sperry

So... TP... can I send you a file of the spreadsheet? Do you have a way to put spreadsheets on here so they can be read? Also, if anyone wants to send their e-mail address to sperry1045@aol.com, I would be happy to send the file. Meanwhile... French Open is next. SPerry picks Djokovic and Muguruza. Jabali: Fed, Muguruza. Alpha: Theim, Sharapova. Veglia: Djokovic, Radwanska. Stella: Murray, Halep. Terror: DelPotro, Halep. Alex: Murray, No pick.

sperry

Fifty lashes for me for ignoring the women: Congrats to Terror for picking Serena. We had 4 Kerbers, a Pliskova, and a no pick. (Strange only one Serena pick, think I.)

Alpha

Haha! Not one pick for Nadal for the FO. Actually, not pick fro Nadal for any slam. Does this site have a teeny weeny systemic bias?

DSG

Hey Sperry, DSG here. I'm so glad to see that you are keeping up on the tennis. I haven't been interested since Federer and Nadal have started losing. If they get their wind back I'll have something to see. Are there any new ones that look very promising?

I keep wanting Dustin Brown to start winning and not to be so inconsistent

O

"""Federer will win more tournaments than he did in 2016 (zero).""" - WHAT a genius, ya, TP!

sperry

3 people currently have one point: Stella and Alex picked Federer for the men’s AO, and Terror picked Serena for the women. Stella is the only person with a shot at the women’s FO by picking Halep. Still 3 in the running for the men’s FO as Alpha picked Thiem (amazing pick, IMHO) and Stella and Alex have Murray. So Stella may have 3 points in a few days! GO WARRIORS!! (fair weather fan here... but, hey... they play and exciting brand of basketball.)

Alpha

If it happens, wiuld this be the first time in history that the team never lost in the playoffs?

sperry

I was told by someone who should know that no team has ever gone 12-0 ... so... 16-0 would be truly amazing. I could be wrong, but I can't imagine the Cavs playing the next one with a lot of heart. Warriors finished the regular season 15-1. 31-1 ain't a bad way to finish the season. So what the hell prompted you to pick Theim for the FO?

Alpha

Yeah, can you believe the two teams playing were 12-0 and 12-1 when the series started. And the 1 loss for the Cavs was despite a 23 point lead at home. Very strange playoffs. My teams is the Lakers -- the less said the better.

I arrived at Thiem largely by default. First, I thought Roger and Rafa were both cooked. Second, I thought Novak was partially cooked, as in he'd come back but only on a hard court. Of the remainder, I genuinely believed that Thiem was the best clay courter -- semis at RG last year, won another tournament; beat Roger at Rome (think) and Rafa too in LatAm. He's a top 10 player. Not that far fetched a pick actually, though every assumption I've made is coming wrong :-)

My "gut" pick is Stan at Wimbledon. He's winning a new slam every year and I figured this was Wimbledon's turn. I wouldn't mind getting both my FO and wimpy picks wrong and see him win this one.

sperry

Well... no one picked either of the men's finalists, so there won't be a change there. Stella can still pick up a point if Halep wins.

O

2. Federer wins AO
3. Nadal wins RG

My predictions could be 2 for 2 but doesn't matter. When it comes watching tennis I support Federer Stan Thiem. Hopefully Stan wins the FO a second time now. It promises to be the greatest match of all time after AO or surpassing AO.

DK

Why are you not counting O's responses dd Nov 23rd, so far she is right on target?

O

I remember at UO Stan suffered a huge TOC disadvantage. I called Stan the better player to beat Djokovic and he did. This one is super close. In terms of the predictions, Sperry wanted a set of complete answers ATP WTA. I don't watch tennis these days and know very few WTA players. ATP players I know a few and those I don't know shall not win a slam yet.

nick

O is so right. But I hope she is not right tomorrow. I want Stan to win against all odds.

sperry

Post Wimbledon update: Only two hits at the Big W: Terror and Alex picked Federer. Congrats. This gives us a tie for first place: Terror by virtue of his calls for Serena to take the AO and Fed to win at Wimbledon. And Alex by picking Federer at the AO and Wimbledon. (And, no... this is not a die-hard Fed fan who picked him for everything. These are the only two slams he predicted him to win. And he predicted him to be #1 at year's end. Doesn't seem horribly far-fetched.) Stella has picked up one point for picking Federer at the AO. Otherwise, it's goose-eggs all around. Only one correct pick so far in the WTA.

sperry

Looks like us predictors ain't doin' so well. Nobody picked the USO winners. Score remains the same: Terror and Alex in the lead with two points each, and Stella with one.

sperry

The results are all in and tabulated. By question:
Who will be the ATP #1 Zero correct answers. Male slam winners: Only four correct answers. Stella and Alex picked Federer in the AO, and Terror and Alex picked him at Wimbledon. Who fell the farthest? Five men had double digit falls in the rankings. Murray, Djokovic, Raonic and Nishikori all had rough years. But Monfil was the “winner” falling from 7 to 39, and Perry, Jabali, and Alpha got that one right. Easiest question must have been: “who will be the new guy in the WTF?” Five of the six who voted went for Zverev. (Jabali abstaining.) Only Veglia thought Federer and Nadal would both be in the top 5. (Perry and Alpha missed on both.) Jabali, Terror and Alex all said Federer Si, Nadal, no. (Possible 2 points.) (Tie breakers at the end.)

On to the women: Who will be #1 on the women’s side? Zero correct answers. Slam winners? Terror got Serena at the AO, otherwise we scored a big goose egg. Who would fall the farthest out of the top 10? Four had falls of 20 or more. I’ll cut Serena some slack, but Kerber and Cibulkova? The “winner” was Radwanska. Fell from 3 to 28. Can’t blame anyone for not calling that one. Terror was alone in calling Svitolina as the new comer to the finals. The easy questions on the women’s side: will Sharapova make it back to the top 5? And will Serena retire? Jabali, Stella and Terror got them both. (Possible 2 points.) Perry, Alpha, Veglia got one of the two.

The winner: Terror is alone at the top with 7 points. Good job. Oddly enough, FOUR of us had FOUR points: Jabali, Veglia, Stella and Alex. (BUT… Alex did it without making ANY guesses on the women’s side.) All of the 4 got one of the two tie-breakers right. So even after the tie-breakers, it’s a 4 way tie for second. Here are the tie-breakers, you decide which one is best. Jabali gets my vote. He actually made two predictions, but there was only one point possible. He said Murray and Novak would win zero slams, and that Raonic would fall out of the top 5 due to injury. Nailed them both, and neither were obvious. Veglia thought Woz would make it back into the top 5. That one shocked me. Maybe it shouldn’t have. Stella thought Bouchard would be into modelling. (Don’t know whether that was a dig at her tennis.) If you google her, there are a ton of modelling pics… so… I guess it’s a point. Alex said both Fed and Nadal would still be “up there.” Perry and Alpha wrap up the seven participants with 3 and 2 points respectively.

Alpha

Anyone who got "Murray and Novak would win zero slams" gets my vote.

Congrats Terror and, in my book, congrats Jabali! And THANKS Sperry for a huge effort.

Two questions: (1) Shouldn't Terror get a HOF? and (2) Should we do this again for 2018? We already have the questions.

What say TP?

Tennis Planet

ALPHA

Terror gets WOF.

Need the questions listed so I can copy / paste it for the 2018 contest.

Alpha

ATP:

1. Who will be the year-end #1? 5 points

2. Who will win:2 points each
2.1 AO?
2.2 FO?
2.3 Wimbledon?
2.4 USO?

3. Who will have the biggest fall among players in the top 10? 2 points

4. Which new player will be in the WTF next year? 2 points

5. Will Federer or Nadal be in the top 5 at the year end? If yes, whom? Or both? 2 points

6. Will Djkovic or Murray win a slam? 2 points.Bonus 2 points if you get the slam right.

7. Rank in order at year end -- Dimitrov, Zverev, Thiem and Goffin. Two points for getting the top guy right, one point for others
Tie Break: Anything out of the ordinary you see happening?

Women:

1. Who will be the year-end #1? 5 points

2. Who will win: 2 points each
2.1 AO?
2.2 FO?
2.3 Wimbledon?
2.4 USO?

3. Who will have the biggest fall among players in the top 10? 2 points

4. Which new player will be in the WTA Finals next year? 2 points

5. Will Simona or Wozniacki win a slam? 2 points. Bonus 2 points if you get the slam right.

6. Will Serena or Ostapenko in a slam? 2 points.

Tie Break: Anything out of the ordinary you see happening?

Alpha: Suggestions: I DEFINITELY agree that the points should be graded. I awarded the same number of points for simple questions as I did for a Y/E #1 or a slam winner. Dumb. If #1 is 5 points, a slam should be 3 points, think I. (Guessing two would be more difficult than picking #1? Not sure.) Biggest fall is a fun one. (To the one organizing this: jot down the top 10 women. WTA site only goes back to April. You can find the list, but it's a few minutes of wasted time.) It was the question most answered correctly, (men's side, anyway) so maybe only one point. RE: new in the year end finals. Careful here. I had a vote or two for someone who was not new. Just need to check that before all votes finalized. Love your #7 for the men. Lastly, probably be smart to look at the tie-breakers. Avoid the "somebody in the top 25 will win Wimbledon." (I didn't get any, though.)

sperry

Just got another thought. I didn't award any points on the women's side because no one picked Radwanska. Maybe give a point to the person who picks the player with the biggest drop in rankings. So SOMEONE gets a point, even if they don't nail it.

Alpha

Won't you please organize? You are, by far, the most organized of the lot here. Put the points in as you see right. I'm useless. Can only pontificate.

It'll also keep you somewhat attached to the site.

My tie break will be this. You'll get a new #1 -- it won't any of the big 4. If you push, I'll go with Dimitrov.
