Assuming Federer stays healthy, there's ONE 'should be obvious' strategy that may (Heck, will) allow him to win Slam No. 18.
What is it?
HINT: ROOT.
First correct answer = Wall Of Fame listing.
Winner / Correct answer: Thursday, 5th Jan, 2017.
« Andy Murray talks about his quarter-final win at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha and how growing up in Scotland prepared him for playing in windy conditions. | Main | Happy Birthday to Rodaina: Jan 6. »

Well done, Alpha!

If this is the correct answer, possibly one of the most impressive WoF victories ever.
I however, disagree this would be a winning strategy in 2017. Return game is probably the biggest difference between now and 20 years ago. Having said that, here's an alternative:
MORE - Come in more.

He'll just try to amply the mutual love between him and the fans.

HOPE that something/someone takes out Murray , Nole , Milos leaving a clear path to one more

Entering with a lower ranking, he'll hope to beat the potential winner long before the final.

Murray became KNIGHT.

HINT: ROOT.

Yeah, back to root(s) as in serve-and-volley at Wimbledon.
Posted by: Veglia | 12/30/2016 at 04:43 PM
Focus on root strength - AO, W and UO, bye bye everything on clay and other unnecessary events. Hopefully everyone else is tired at W, and Fed can run away with it.

Obvious strategy to win one more slam for Fed is to hit more Forehands during his rallies. He has to plan his rallies such that he is able to play more from his forehand wing. Especially his inside-out forehand is pretty good. Forehand is his strength.

The root is Fed's serve. Make it so strong that own serve games are a formality. The quicker he holds serve, the faster other guy has to serve and then capitalize on errors.

The root is stopping a bad trend: - Nadal beat him in many slams, Djokovic then beat him in many slams. He never lost a slam final to Murray? not yet? He needs to continue to beat Murray and not lose a slam final to him. If that's the case, then a Fed will win slams.

Since his seeding will be lower now, Federer needs to Root for top seeds (Djoker, Murray et. al.) to get knocked out of the Slams early, to save him from some grueling matches before reaching the Finals.

Could work in Roger's favor: the earlier he meets them, the fresher he'll be,
since sustaining his level has more often than not been his failing of late...

The root of playing is relax and have fun, knowing his 17 record is now safe.
Posted by: O | 12/31/2016 at 06:20 PM
safe ! . All it needs is one more Rafa or Novak run. Novak is still second seed and won two slams last year.

TP, are you sure the hint is not HOLE? As in poke a hole in condoms used by Djokovic, Murray, Nadal et al. I mean as many guys as necessary.
Btw, condom comes from the latin word condere, which means "to hide" and ROOT is the hidden part of the tree. So, there you go, I've got it right?

We are officially in the era of post domination. Murray is the default number one, they have to honour him every possible way fast. The root picks up the pieces.

Assuming Fed stays healthy then I can only imagine him winnning Wimbledon if he is to win one more slam. Wimbledon is his root. Grass is his favourite surface. I dunno the obvious strategy but I would propose Fed to hire Becker as coach before Wimbledon begins. He has to improve his game a lot for Wimbledon. Improving his game overall (serve, volley, return, backhand) is the best strategy if he needs to win at least one more slam.

Put another way ... the root of his issues in the past couple of years was physical (injuries big and small). So, to avoid those, shorten the points.
Posted by: Veglia | 01/03/2017 at 11:11 AM
The root is, at this age, he has only one opportunity, and he needs to make it count.
Posted by: O | 01/03/2017 at 12:59 PM
Root could be grass has roots. Skip the clay season, focus on grass.
Posted by: Alpha | 01/03/2017 at 02:18 PM
Is this really much different from "come in on everything"?
Posted by: Alpha | 01/03/2017 at 02:19 PM
His root is forehand domination (similar to what Jabali said...).
Posted by: O | 01/03/2017 at 04:17 PM
that's what I said earlier
"HOPE that something/someone takes out Murray , Nole , Milos leaving a clear path to one more
"
Posted by: Stella | 01/03/2017 at 06:21 PM
Not much. The only difference would be to pull the trigger on fh even on minor opportunity from the baseline.
Posted by: Veglia | 01/04/2017 at 05:08 AM
WINNER: JABALI.
