I guess it would be a coincidence since they both played around the same time when many players didn’t make the trip all the way to Australia, especially around the holidays.

Don't see any similarity at all.

BORG: played only ONCE --- when he was 17 years old.

McENROE: played FIVE DIFFERENT YEARS --- beginning when he was 23 and ending when he was 32.

What I personally find more interesting and/or significant:

CONNORS won it in 1974 in the first year he played it...lost the Final in 1975...
AND THEN NEVER WENT BACK AGAIN, even though his career lasted another 17 freaking years!

[ can you say "wasted opportunity"? ]
