They are the only ones who can come back to strong after a break. Both have done it before seamlessly.
Others can't match up.

*come back SO strong
Posted by: Nipurn | 05/11/2017 at 08:28 PM
Yes, Nipurn is right, that was simple.
A more challenging answer is: Both need a break from time to time to clean from PEDs and grow some hair ...

Did people know Federer can come back this strong after a 6 mo break - irrefutably? Don't think so.

The contest between Nadal and Federer was often decided by the latter's inability to convert break points. Once he started converting them, as in 2017, he started beating Nadal.

I think Alpha nailed it. I recall one of the RG finals, it was 0/17 break points. The problem for Fed is on Ad- court and Rafa will send him out of court with an easy put away shot. Now with Fed taking ball early he can convert some if not all.

MOST people know this - irrefutably? Don't think so.

The older they get, the more they need to take breaks from the tour.
Posted by: O | 05/13/2017 at 07:41 PM
They need each other to thrive.

TP, "irrefutably" doesn't even apply to the "world is round".

How about 'Most (people) - irrefutably'?
Posted by: Tennis Planet | 05/13/2017 at 08:19 PM
Haha TP! That's like "most people unanimously agree".

Most already know about Federer and Nadal - irrefutably, that they were in their prime.
After the break from the tour, @ 2017 season they reinforced that they are still in their prime.

Despite Nadal's dominance of Federer, most already know about Federer was better than Nadal.

Byt most definitely not on clay.

O
You are on the right track.
Remember the question is "Something occurred @ 2017 season...... What is it?"
'Break' is not the answer. It's just a hint.

@ 2017 season Federer reversed a 10 year losing streak in slam matches to Nadal by winning AO. He also arrived at a four match winning streak against Nadal which is unprecedented.

The overall record of these guys showed that Federer was irrefutably the better player. But against Nadal the BH would always break down handing Nadal the win. In 2017, the BH stopped breaking down and Federer started beating Nadal consistently.

@ 2017 season Federer perfected every aspect of his game, which is a notch higher than Nadal's. He beats Nadal three times in a short period of time at different court speeds. Nadal being such a good problem solver found no answer.
Posted by: O | 05/14/2017 at 08:28 PM
So, by beating Nadal in a GS and two Masters back to back to back, especially the first ever win on hardcourt at GS over Nadal, Fed confirmed what everyone knew (or strongly believed). He is a better hard court player.
Posted by: Veglia | 05/14/2017 at 08:46 PM
Most already knww about Federer was better than Nadal. Nadal mostly relied on his power and youth to tire others, and his serve was weak.
After the break from the tour, @ 2017 season they reinforced that irrefutably Federer is the better all round player better server. Nadal's weak serve is exposed, and he surrendered too many service breaks, allowing Federer win three in a row quickly. Although AO was a 5 setter, but none of the sets reached a tiebreaker. At IW, Nadal suffered a straight sets loss and he lost each set by a margin of double break down. At MIAMI where the court was quite slow, Nadal still lost in straight sets by being broken in each set.

Last attempt. Federer has always known his body well -- when to give it breaks. I think so does Nadal though he expresses it differently. 2017 proves this.

Most already know about Federer was better than Nadal, but Nadal is the clay king.
After the break from the tour, @ 2017 season they reinforced that irrefutably Federer is still better than Nadal on hard court, and Nadal is the clay king. Federer beat Nadal three times winning three hard court titles. Nadal lost all his hard court finals but immediately won three clay titles.

Despite Nadal's dominance of Federer, most already know about Federer was the GOAT Nadal was the clay king.
After the break from the tour, @ 2017 season they reinforced that irrefutably the above notion. Federer beat Nadal to win three hard court titles including AO. Nadal instead won three clay court titles.
